Talk about what a relationship means to you
Discuss availability, intentions and expectations before assuming that you want the same connection.
Describe the present, not a promise
You may want casual dating, companionship or a lasting relationship. Explain what feels right now and admit uncertainty where it exists. “I would like to meet and see how we get along” is clearer than promising commitment to keep someone's attention. Being trans does not determine a person's relationship goals.
Ask what the words mean
People can understand “casual” or “serious” differently. Ask about practical expectations: time together, communication between meetings and whether either person is dating others. These conversations can develop gradually. An enjoyable date or frequent messages do not automatically create an agreement to be exclusive.
Recognise a mismatch early
If your preferences differ, neither person needs to be wrong. You can say: “I enjoy talking with you, but I am looking for something different.” Avoid agreeing to an arrangement you expect to change later. Revisit expectations when feelings or circumstances shift, and give the other person the same freedom to reconsider.
