Discuss privacy before sharing a date online

Agree on photographs, social media and personal details before making a new connection public.

Separate meeting from publicity

Agreeing to a date is different from agreeing to appear in a photograph or social media post. Ask before taking pictures, tagging an account or naming someone in a public story. People may have different preferences about visibility. Do not reveal someone's trans identity or personal history to others without their permission.

Choose what remains private

Talk about which details are comfortable to share with friends and which should stay between you. You can say: “I am happy to mention that we met, but please do not share my photographs.” Keep workplace, home address and other identifying information out of casual posts unless the person has agreed.

Respect a change of preference

Someone can reconsider a previous decision about a photograph or a tag. Listen to the request and discuss removing material you control. Before sharing screenshots of a conversation, remember that they contain another person's words and possibly identifying details. Private communication is best treated as private unless everyone involved agrees otherwise.
